Deal or No Deal

Twenty-six briefcases, one big question, zero trivia. Deal or No Deal is pure probability theater: contestants pick a sealed case from 1 to 26 (each hiding a cash value from a penny to $1 million), then open the other cases one at a time while a shadowy "Banker" offers them cash to quit.

Originally a Dutch format called Miljoenenjacht (Endemol, 2000), Deal or No Deal became a worldwide phenomenon and has been licensed to more than 80 countries. The American version premiered on NBC on December 19, 2005 with Howie Mandel and aired 264 network episodes through 2009, plus two syndicated daytime seasons. Mandel's opening fist-bump with contestants became a signature of the show. NBC's island-based reboot Deal or No Deal Island launched in 2024 with Joe Manganiello and ran two seasons before its cancellation in December 2025.

What makes it unique: Deal or No Deal has no trivia, no physical challenges, and no strategy in the traditional sense — just sealed-case probabilities and the Banker's ever-changing offers. The tension comes from the widening gap between statistical expected value and what the contestant feels lucky enough to risk. The show has produced viral moments: top prizes awarded, top prizes left behind, and Banker offers rejected in favor of single-penny cases.
