Family Feud

Name something you'd find in a kitchen. Survey says! Family Feud pits two families of five against each other, not on trivia but on guessing the most popular answers to open-ended questions posed to a survey of 100 people.

Created by Mark Goodson, Family Feud premiered on ABC on July 12, 1976 with Richard Dawson, whose kiss-every-contestant style made him the defining voice of the early run. The show has cycled through hosts Ray Combs, Louie Anderson, Richard Karn, John O'Hurley, and (since 2010) Steve Harvey, whose reaction-based comedic hosting and viral YouTube compilations have taken the show to record ratings. Harvey also hosts the primetime Celebrity Family Feud.

What makes it unique: Unlike most game shows, Family Feud isn't about knowing the right answer — it's about guessing what the average person would say. Questions range from the mundane ("Name a yellow fruit") to the risqué ("Name something a man reaches for first thing in the morning"), and Harvey's double-takes at unexpected answers are a large part of the show's current appeal. The Fast Money bonus round, where two family members try to rack up 200 points in 40 combined seconds for a $20,000 prize, remains one of the most imitated endgames in the genre.
