Jeopardy! Season 43 premieres on Monday, September 14, and for once the changes are visible before the first clue is read. Executive producers Michael Davies and Sarah Whitcomb Foss spent the September 3 episode of the Inside Jeopardy! podcast walking through what is new, and the list runs from the lighting rig to the rules that decide who makes the postseason. Here is the preview.

The Set Gets a Glow-Up

The game is unchanged, but the room around it is not. The set's columns have been rebuilt with vertical lines running through them, and the lighting team has introduced new colors aimed at what the producers called a richer look. Think of it as the same stage with better cinematography. Longtime viewers will notice it in the first wide shot; newer viewers will just think the show looks a little more expensive.

A Cleaner Postseason

The more consequential change is administrative. For the past few seasons, qualification for the Tournament of Champions and the rest of the postseason rolled continuously, with late-season champions sometimes carried into the following year's field. Season 43 ends that. There are no more rolling qualification weeks, the qualification window for the upcoming postseason has already closed, and by the end of the season viewers will know exactly who is in. Davies said the change was possible because the show already has enough qualified players. The practical upshot: a champion who wins big this fall is playing for next year's tournament, and the bracket will be settled before the summer break.

The Champions to Watch

The top of this year's field is already loaded. Jamie Ding, a policy analyst from Lawrenceville, New Jersey, won 31 straight games last season and $882,605 in regular play, the fifth-longest streak in the show's history. His run ended in April at the hands of chess master Greg Shahade, which set up one of the more anticipated rematches the postseason has seen in years. Ding then spent part of his summer winning $1 million with Ben Affleck on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, so his trivia form is not in question.

The reigning Tournament of Champions winner is Paolo Pasco, who swept the February final in three games over 16-game champion Scott Riccardi and TJ Fisher. The win earned Pasco, a seven-game champion, a seat in the 2026 Jeopardy! Masters, where he finished fourth. Andrew He won this year's Invitational Tournament. Expect all of these names to surface again as the season's tournament schedule is announced.

Spin-Offs and Specials

The Jeopardy! universe kept expanding over the summer. ESPN Jeopardy!, hosted by Joe Buck, launched July 31 on Hulu, Disney+, and the ESPN app, with 18 ESPN personalities and celebrities playing a ten-episode bracket for a $500,000 charity prize. A second season, announced September 28, opens the tournament to sports fans for a $300,000 grand prize; here's how to apply. Celebrity Jeopardy! Season 5, originally expected in the fall, has been moved by ABC to midseason 2027. And the fourth season of Jeopardy! Masters wrapped on ABC on September 8, with Yogesh Raut winning the $500,000 top prize.

The Live Show Everyone Keeps Hinting At

Davies closed the podcast with a tease: "Some very big announcements are coming up in the next month and a half in the world of Jeopardy!" He has spoken before about wanting to stage a live version of the show, and that is the most likely headline. A live Jeopardy! would be a genuine first for a program that has taped five episodes a day for four decades. We will cover it the moment it is official.

Locked In Through 2028

None of this is happening on a short leash. In January 2023, CBS Media Ventures, which distributes the show, announced a five-season renewal with the ABC-owned stations that runs through the 2027 to 2028 broadcast season. Season 44 is already guaranteed. For a show that spent 2021 in a very public host search, that stability is the biggest change of all.

How to Watch

Jeopardy! airs weeknights in syndication, typically at 7:00 or 7:30 pm local time, often paired with Wheel of Fortune, which also premieres September 14 with its own new opening round.
