Olivia Rodrigo’s newest music video is a treat for game show fans. In the video for her remix of “expectations” with Chappell Roan, posted to Rodrigo’s official YouTube channel on October 15, the two singers face off on a made-up retro program called The Big Expectations Show. Talking Heads frontman David Byrne plays its host, Johnny Johnson, and Bardia Zeinali directed it.

The Classic Shows Behind the Sets

BuzzerBlog, which covers the game show business, picked out the references. Here are the shows they come from:

  • Match Game. The video opens with a take on the show’s “flippy-box” intro, the brightly lit flipping panels of the 1970s version. That CBS revival premiered in 1973 and ran through 1982; our Match Game moments page covers what made it a comedy classic.
  • Wheel of Fortune. The video uses a hand-operated puzzle board like the one the show traces its roots to, plus an animated version of one of Wheel’s 1990s openings, with Rodrigo and Roan in Pat Sajak’s and Vanna White’s places. Wheel fans noticed: in a popular r/WheelOfFortune thread, RAS310 matched the cartoon to the show’s 1994–95 opening. More on the show’s history: Wheel of Fortune moments and trivia.
  • Jeopardy! One scene borrows the red, blue and aluminum look of the show’s “grid set,” a favorite of longtime viewers. Our Jeopardy! guide covers the show today.
  • Family Feud. In a round called “Sister Squabble,” Roan takes on Rodrigo in a face-off, on a metallic set that BuzzerBlog says recalls the show’s late-1990s run, when Louie Anderson hosted. Here is every Family Feud host in order.
  • Hollywood Squares. One of the video’s biggest shots plays out on what looks like the set of the original Hollywood Squares, the giant tic-tac-toe wall of celebrity boxes.

Producer Dan Nigro, who produced the song, makes a cameo too, Variety reports.
